China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited (hereafter referred to as “CSHK” and the "company") announced that the Organic Resources Recovery Centre Phase 2 (O⬝PARK2) won the Gold Award at the "Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence 2021" (HKAEE). The company received the award from Secretary for Environment and Ecology TSE Chin-wan on February 20. In addition, two other projects undertaken by CSHK received Merit Awards in the same category, including the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant and the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns project. These results acknowledge the company's efforts in promoting green buildings and low-carbon construction technologies, complementing the growing trend of innovative and sustainable construction technologies.

In the ceremony, the Secretary for Environment and Ecology TSE Chin-wan acknowledged the effort of different sectors in Hong Kong to promote sustainable development. He addressed that it hadn’t been easy to achieve carbon neutrality during the construction of O⬝PARK2, which would come into service next year. He appreciated CSHK for its efforts in promoting environmental protection and sustainable development.
Commenting on the highly prestigious award, CSHK Chairman and President Danny C.S. HUNG said, "CSHK is honoured to win with its projects the “Hong Kong Environmental Excellence Award”, which is affectionately known as the "Oscar" of the environmental protection industry. This is an important recognition that underscores CSHK’s endeavour for green and low-carbon development”.
He added, “the O⬝PARK2 project, which won the Gold Award, is the first construction project in China that pledges to achieve carbon neutrality during its construction. Going forward, CSHK will further its research, development, promotion, and application of green and low-carbon construction technologies, to help lead the transformation of the construction industry and actively promote sustainable development.”
The "Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence" is jointly organised by the Environmental Campaign Committee, the Environment and Ecology Bureau, and nine supporting organisations. The annually presented award aims to encourage enterprises and organisations to implement environmental management, measure the performance of their commitment to environmental management, and commend them with outstanding performance in environmental management.

Embracing low-carbon and innovative technologies and promoting green and sustainable construction at CSHK
CSHK has played a leading role in the construction industry and made great strides in recent years to promote the use of low-carbon and environmentally friendly construction, embrace innovative technologies, and capitalise on the increasing demand for green and sustainable building practices to drive the industry and work towards carbon neutrality together with the Hong Kong government by 2050. The company is committed to promoting green buildings and sustainable development in the various stages of planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance for promoting sustainable development.
The O⬝PARK2 embraces green building technologies during its construction period and utilizes sustainable low-carbon building materials. Using concrete bricks manufactured with CCUS technology and low-carbon steel bars, O⬝PARK2 has reduced the project’s carbon footprint by 78% and 67% respectively. In addition, CSHK has developed its proprietary "Carbon Neutral Cloud Platform", which uses artificial intelligence technology to automatically collect the number of materials consumed, and calculate carbon emissions while updating the data in real-time, helping O⬝PARK2 to achieve carbon neutrality throughout its life cycle. As of the end of June 2022, O⬝PARK2’s total carbon emissions stood at 24,389 tonnes, with a carbon reduction of 4,240 tonnes, exceeding its initial target of 3,198 tonnes. Consultants from a third-party certification agency have jointly audited all the above carbon footprints of O⬝PARK2.
CSHK spares no effort to promote green buildings and environmentally friendly construction. At this year’s "Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence" award ceremony, in addition to the O⬝PARK2 project which won the gold award, the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant project and the relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns project both won Merit Awards. The Tseung Kwan O desalination plant project includes several environmental protection features. In addition to being a water production facility designed to cope with climate change, the project has adopted sustainable design and construction methods. For example, the site office was built with Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) technology, the open channels and desalination plant utilised Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) prefabricated components. The electromechanical devices in the factory were widely assembled with MultiTrade Integrated Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MiMEP) to shorten the construction period and strengthen quality control, ultimately improving engineering safety and reducing wastage of construction materials. Permanent rooftop photovoltaic panels were also installed in temporary construction site office buildings early on to reduce fossil energy consumption and carbon emissions.
As for the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns relocation project, the extensive use of MiC and DfMA construction methods helps reduce construction waste. The application of an artificial intelligence weighbridge system and a GPS global positioning system to enhance waste management and the introduction of solar energy technology for various equipment on-site helps reduce carbon emissions; while the upcycling of abandoned drainpipes and trees into rest facilities for workers all contribute to the project’s sustainability efforts.
